Accessibility Report
So what's the deal with all this?
Before this paper I was under the impression that everyone thought that the WCAG standards were a good thing. Apparently that is just not the case, although everyone recognizes a need for making web sites accessible it seems that some of the requirements of the Accessibility Standards are not technically feasible in some displays of content. Also, many of the rules are not clear as to what exactly is expected and furthermore, like CSS and every other attempt at trying to unify the web experience many feel like experts that should be consulted to give advice, are not.
It seems a lot of the guidelines are being written in a cryptic, legal speak that designers are having a hard time interpreting. Designers are calling for a more clear and understandable version of the standards to be presented. Until that time, designers who can't understand the rule simply will not be able to implement it. Which should be obvious to the WCAG especially since there very own Guideline 14 states “Ensure that documents are clear and simple.”
Without designers having a clear view of what the WCAG expects of them, they can't be held accountable for the mistakes they make. I don't think web designers want to shut out users that have accessibility issues, but the way I see it. Measures should be taken to include as many people as possible. However, blind people still can't drive.
